Upstate New Yorkers are used to snowy, frigid winters but this winter was epic! An unprecedented blizzard shut down most of the upstate area, including the cities of Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Grand Island, along with all highways into and out of the region. Grand Island was particularly hard hit but despite the storm the SecurAmerica security officers assigned to Life Technologies' Grand Island campus remained on duty to help protect the facility. Site Supervisor Jeff Jackson remained at the site for 24 straight hours and coordinated with Security Officers Shaun Helsel, Michelle Garcia and Joshua Heslor to cover the required post assignments that needed to be staffed regardless of brutal weather conditions. The determination of the Life Tech security team to get to and remain at the site during this historic storm earned the recognition of Life Technologies and SecurAmerica. On February 8, 2014, Supervisor Jackson and his team were presented Legendary Service Awards for their "unselfish and extraordinary efforts" during the storm.
